part 2
Marriage: He doesn't think about it too much. Especially now that he's not in his world and the sole heir to his father's estate. It's cool for other people, he guesses.
Children: Josh is pretty good with kids. He's patient and caring and for a guy surprisingly tolerant of any number of girly playtime activities. Assuming he doesn't have an episode, you could do far worse than letting Josh watch your kids. He's a big brother through and through.
Family/Family Values: Two different things. Josh loved his family more than his own life and is still agonized that his sisters are gone. Family values, on the other hand, are all about pretending to be normal so as not to embarrass or shame your folks and Josh is over that. He's been told his whole life just to try and 'act normal'.
Children/Youth: He misses being a kid sometimes. Life was easier then and his sisters were around.
Old age: Hasn't thought about it much. Like most young adults, Josh hasn't given much thought to what old age is even like.
Sex: Until recently, impossible for him unless he was drunk. Now? Uncomfortable, awkward, and anxiety inducing.
Love: The idea of it is nice, but look at him. He's not dating material and he knows it.
Friendship/Other relationships: Essential, yet Josh is terrified of screwing them up again. His track record isn't very good for keeping good relationships.
Homosexuality: Doesn't bother him in the least. When he was on his meds, anyone who got a reaction out of him was worth looking at. Now that he's not been on them for a while, it still doesn't bother him.
The opposite sex: Great! He's somewhat protective of women in general, especially if they remind him of Beth or Hannah. Will definitely go get drinks with them and make sure no one creeps on them.
The same sex: Bro! Get over here and have a drink with him. You're cool too! Josh is more likely to stop 'acting normal' around men than he is women. Feels less of a need to impress them.
Money/Material things: Nice, but not completely necessary in the Nexus. Josh is accustomed to having nice things, but he's perfectly content with what he's got, too. Was most likely to spend his money before on his friends anyway, though he does miss having the high end video editing software and rig he used to have at his house.
Politics: Did someone order a nap, stat?
Religion:Vehemently atheist. If a kind loving god lets the shit he's seen (including himself) run free in the world, they're not the kind of god he wants anything to do with.
Destiny/Duty: A sense of helplessness. So much of what's happened to Josh stemmed from circumstances beyond his control. He doesn't see much point in fighting it.
Magic/Myth: Skeptical until recently. He's seen monsters and myth come to life first hand, and witnessed all kinds of magic in the Nexus. Now he views both with a hefty dose of suspicion laced with curiosity.
Racism/Races in general: People are fucking people. There's assholes of all shades. He will not tolerate bigotry towards people he cares for. Not even a little.
Science/Technology: Hella convenient. He's not as addicted to tech as some of his friends are, but it makes things so much goddamn easier. Plus he's got a head for gadgets and electronics.
Nature/Animals: Nature calms him down a lot. He preferred staying at his parents' lodge in the mountains over living in the city for the year up until the events that lead to him being in the Nexus. So long as he can bring his tech and work into nature he's perfectly content.
Modernity: Necessary for a comfortable life. How did people Live without electricity?
Antiquity: To be respected and their warnings studied. He's learned the hard way not to brush it off.
Their past: Shame, pain, and suffering. Josh would give anything to change his past. He wouldn't mind forgetting it, either.
Their future: Intimidating. He isn't sure what to do with himself. Living in the here and now takes all his effort.
Their role in society/job/etc: He enjoys working for Ice Bear and for his mysterious benefactor who works in TV. The work gives him something to do and if it makes peoples' lives easier, that's a bonus.
Drugs and alcohol: Drugs he's wary of unless he knows the dealer. There's a lot of ways to get fucked up or fucking dead taking suspect drugs. Alcohol though, please give it to him. It's the only time he's happy.
Killing/Murder: He's too much of a coward to do it himself but he wouldn't lose sleep if someone else did it to the people he hates.
Education: Learning itself is fun and invigorating but structured formal education was hell for Josh growing up and he was held back a grade once his mental illnesses started showing themselves.
The foreign/unknown: Risky, dangerous, to be careful of if alone. If in a group of friends he's liable to try anything once.
How does the character view life? Until recently as a form of torture. He didn't have much reason to live prior to the Nexus, but he's finding more reasons every day to try harder.
How does the character view death? A light snuffed out that lets the darkness ever further. Loss that can be felt in the bones and an emptiness that never goes away.
How does the character view society? Indifference and a bit of impatience at old fashioned ways of thinking. He's definitely a millennial.
How does the character imagine his/her own death? Reuniting with his sisters.
What does the character want out of life? To find a purpose again.
What does this character consider "success" to be? Not hurting or ruining any more lives than he already has.
What would the character like to change in his/her life? Whatever it is that's wrong with his brain. That makes Him wrong and weird.
What motivates this character? Seeing his friends happy. Josh hasn't quite figured out how to self-motivate now that he's not planning his own detailed lead up to his suicide. If he's really into something he's doing, you can bet it's because there's someone specific he's looking to please.
What discourages this character? Being reminded of who and what he is. Implying that he can't change or get better.
What makes this character happy? Alcohol, being with friends, watching horror movies.
What makes this character sad? Snow, butterflies, angel food cake. Anything that reminds him of his sisters.
What makes this character angry? His own mistakes and shortcomings. People hurting the ones he loves. Star Wars Prequels and shitty remakes of old classics. People who insist the book is better without giving any thought to the work and dedication a cinematographer puts into a film.
What humiliates this character? Having his past drug out, being reminded of his sisters' deaths. Questioning why he does things when he's having an episode.
What most describes this character's personality? Unstable. Josh swings wildly between wanting to be a good person and believing such a thing is impossible for him so he might as well be the villain.
Psychoanalysis (Describe why they act the way they do): Josh sets himself up for failure a lot. Often his goals for self improvement are wildly out of proportion compared to what's reasonable to expect of himself and when he inevitably fails he takes it as a sign that he's rotten to the core after all and should just embrace being a shithead.
I could go on for pages about Josh's laundry list of problems but the two major contributing factors are a serious case of depression (that used to be treated by medication) and a heretofore undiagnosed schizophrenia (that has never been treated). Even when Josh was on his meds all it did was treat the depression. It didn't make his hallucinations stop and left him feeling empty and devoid of the ability to feel.
Does it stem from childhood or an event, or chemical? Look, the man was born with a chemical imbalance that caused mental illness, lost his sisters in a traumatic experience, and is now haunted by a wendigo spirit. Dude is Fucked Up.
