This was a good read! And also, yes, the song is playing in my noggin now.

Do you have any kind of handle on any particular mental illnesses she has, or is it all basically caused by abuse and inhumane conditions? And what's the story with Ivy's tonic and the Joker toxin? Does this all happen in the course of the movie?

I can't believe you're making me want to watch the Suicide Squad movie now. HOW HARD DO I HAVE TO SWALLOW MY IRRITATION TOWARDS JARED LETO'S EXISTENCE TO GET THROUGH IT

She is a hodgepodge of a few different illnesses. Dissociation is the most common. She just... disconnects from reality.

And since I take her back story from Mad Love, Harley had the signs of dissociation long before entering Arkham. During her psychology studies in college, she came up with a theory about being in love being equal to being a criminal. She convinced her boyfriend that she had committed various crimes. And he protects her... by shooting an innocent man. He convinces Harley to kill him out of love... and that traumatized her.

Harley was infused with the Joker venom first. I do take the storyline from Suicide Squad movie, where she throws herself into a vat of the venom to prove her love for him. Instead of dying from the venom, it changed her. Due to the venom, her skin is porcelain white. She also has fits of laughter, that she can not control. At time, the laughter gets so out-of-control, that she is not even aware of other situations going on around her.

As for Ivy's tonic... this also comes from Mad Love. Basically, Ivy found Harley after an abusive situation. Harley and Ivy got close. Real close. And they wanted to explore their relationship. Ivy gave Harley a boost of her tonic... so Harley could touch her, without getting poisoned. The tonic also gave her enhanced strength, enhanced agility (and she was already a gymnast), immunity to other toxins and poisons, immunity to alcoholic or drugs.

And I have an out for you. I take A LOT of my take of Harley from the Suicide Squad comics. While I liked the movie, there was not a lot of character depth put into Harley. I took what I liked from the movie. But most of what I use are from the DC Comics.
