Getting to hear you...

I was thinking (dangerous a hobby as that is) and came across something I'd like to ask you all:

What are some of your favourite quotes from your characters? Or about your characters?

Witty one-liners, or life philosophies, in canon, from roleplay, anything and everything. I'm curious to read the quotes I might have missed, or appreciate the classics. And don't worry about bombarding me. List as many as you like!

Because I have this quote already typed out in several places, this is an easy one to share. This is how Amelia thinks of herself (less now than in the past, but still very relevant):

I am not a nice person. Not generally, at least. Or, rather, not in earnest. I am kind to my family because they are my family and that is what they deserve, even if they annoy me and do things that make me want to tear my hair out. I am kind to my customers, because I need their continued patronage to support myself and my family. However, no other person can say that I am generally a kind person. I yell orders at my shop hands and warehouse workers. I physically push the limits of my traveling companions. I lie. I cheat people when making deals. I steal. I fight. And when I need to, I kill.

...someone's not very easy on herself. >>;

I am somehow not surprised by this, though she would keep coming up with reasons as to why he was wrong and she was right.

Maybe it's best they not have that conversation. >>;

Oh, Amelia. We... love you... anyway?

But that aside, I like this quote. She always seems to feel the need to own or make what she perceives to be her shortcomings known, and this quote is a good example of that tendency.

This quote is actually from something that came out in one of my "free write, stream-of-consciousness" writing sessions for her. It's pretty humbling and definitely shows the depths of the her lack of self-worth. =/

For sure. And how set and unable/unwilling she is to budge in her negative self-perception.

What a great idea! Very much looking forward to reading everyone's life philosophies and one-liners.

I'll hit this myself once I get home from work and have a little time to get into the audio editing software.

For Helen here, I like this poem by Margaret Atwood: https://www.poets.org/poetsorg/poem/helen-troy-does-countertop-dancing

It's where I got her username from, lol.

I feel like I could quote the entirety of Iphigenia's final monologue, because it's beautiful and haunting, etc etc, but I really like this line she says to her mother, in W.S. Merwin's translation of the play:

"You brought me up to be the light of Greece. Dying, I can say it."

And then she exits the stage, singing. ;_;
bornstrong: (calm)

[personal profile] bornstrong 2016-06-20 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
There are several translations of it I really like, actually! Merwin's a poet, so that one is very flowy and lovely-sounding, but others are more "actable"--that is, more meant to be performed onstage.

I can't decide which style I prefer, honestly. Both have their merits!

This quote is so sad, but so.... proud-sounding at the same time (if I'm reading it right)? It snapshots a lot of character in just a few words. So nice.

Yes, that's exactly it! I think it really captures her personality well.

Gosh, where to begin with a guy like Kirk? He's got so much canon you could pull from. But if we're just looking at the reboot movies Jim's best quotes are all very short and are about context as much as they are the words.

"I don't believe in 'No-Win' scenarios." Is the most often used summation of Jim Kirk as a character, but my personal favorite comes from Into Darkness.

"You're right. You're not making the climb." The determination to save his crew at the cost of his own life, knowing his choice is lethal. Jim Kirk doesn't believe in No Win scenarios, even if pulling off a miracle means he won't be there to see it.

Then again, this is the same man whose famous last words could just as easily be

'Oops.' or 'Watch this!'

conjuredskies: (Conjuration)

[personal profile] conjuredskies 2016-06-18 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm going to have to go looking for other quotes, but this one is easy. About half of Felix's life philosophy comes from this bit in one of the conjuration skill books:

"You see, conjuration is not about might, or solving riddles, or agonizing over musty old scrolls. It's about fostering relations. Being friendly, you might say."

There aren't many from the Dragonborn in canon (silent protagonist ahoy), but there's one said to them, by a legionnaire named Hadvar (if you join the Legion side of the Civil War, he becomes your buddy and iirc potentially a follower), that I've always been fond of:

"Was it your ma or your pa that was the dragon?" I just really appreciated someone making light of the whole 'Dragonborn' thing, when everyone else is placing more and more responsibility on your shoulders or trying to get you on their side for their own reasons.

And, a bonus, one I only recently found but which describes Vanyel's life philosophy so perfectly:

"Please understand, I have been waiting to leave ever since I figured out there were roads willing to take me anywhere I wanted to go." - Unknown Author

[personal profile] drehnifusbahi 2016-06-20 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
It really is xD Hadvar's a really sweet guy in general, which is probably why I could never bring myself to join the Stormcloaks even if I could come up with an IC reason for it. (That, and the 'invade Whiterun' requirement; nope nope nope couldn't do it.)

Still my favorite quote ever from the anime (original, not Brotherhood in this case).

Hughes: Nice mess! Is it over yet?
Roy Mustang: You know, you could try to help while you're here, Hughes.
Hughes: Lay off. I'm as normal as they come and this is a contest of freaks. What do you want me to do, fire my slingshot at him?

I laugh every damn time.

I totally didn't rewatch that episode just because of that quote when I posted this. Nope.

Just that one part, okay?

I'd completely forgotten about that compliment! It was indeed very awkward, but very sweet. It's very... V. XD

Also, I love Harrowheart and his explanations. These are wonderful and perfect. ♥

It's... not her fault she doesn't understand these things? >>; Honestly, she wasn't fishing for anything, she was just confused. Haha.

Yes! I agree with both of these statements. :D

NICE, I was going to do the chandelier one but then I was like "It's far too dramatic, nobody should know about that one." And yet here it is, and I'm so charmed.

Also, oops, I laughed anew at the hand grenade one. I'd totally forgotten that

My favorite quote for Red comes with a shiny visual for everyone to enjoy:

mayfairmonster: Commission! Please don't take. (Lively Conversation; Persuading)

[personal profile] mayfairmonster 2016-06-22 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I love this. It's so ominous-sounding, and it makes me super curious about Red's canon and seeing him in action. >_>

Red says many vague and ominous things in his canon. I try to capture that in the Nexus and I hope I do it well enough for everyone who plays with him! >>;

I have to add these because the more I look at the whole conversation the more I love it. (Sorry, Planks, gonna quote you again.)

"Everyone thinks they're right. That their cause is the best one. Even if they're hurting millions of people. And everyone grabs for more power than they can handle. There is no using 'a little bit of magic'." - Isidor

"So y'all kinda... Live in your own world, then. Like you can't even be part of Earth. Kinda like... Wardens. You don't wanna contaminate the world, so you keep it all locked up in your cell. Shit, I'd probably build a mansion too, if it was gonna be my prison." - Harrowheart

"When you do things because you have to... People don't thank you for it. On the contrary, they complain at you for it. They blame you for something you felt forced to do. I know that. Not everyone does. Not everyone copes well with it, either." - Isidor
