Minoru stood beside his brother throughout the entire memorial ceremony. Because he had once been Hokage, their father's death was a sad day for the village, if not the entire ninja world. His legacy, of course, was carried on in Isamu's leadership. He'd accepted the mantle of Hokage several years earlier. But Minoru could see it in Isamu's face - he'd never felt more powerless in his life.

Eventually, even the sun paid its last respects. The twins sat atop Hokage Rock (on their father's carved head, actually) sharing in each other's company as well as grief.

"Thank you for coming back..." Isamu whispered, leaning against his brother's embrace. He was the older one, if only for a minute, but Minoru somehow ended up the bigger of the two.

"If you need me, I'll be here. Always." He whispered soothingly. "I'm just sorry that..."

"There wasn't anything you could do. Father told you not to."

Minoru was a Sage now. His healing techniques were stronger than they'd ever been. He could jumpstart a weak heart, easily. He could have prolonged the inevitable. But their father was a wise man who felt he'd done what he needed to do. When his time came, he didn't fight it. He was ready to die. So Minoru simply kept vigil.

"He knew Mama was waiting." Isamu whispered brokenly.

"Mama is waiting."

Isamu glanced up. The stars, Minoru once told him, were souls waiting to be reborn. It was a touching metaphor. So many of them were waiting, and this was just one world. Their mother was technically from another world. Fate took a significant leap to bring them together the first time. Could it happen again?

"Do you think he'll find him out there?"

Minoru nodded. "I know he will. I told him where to look."

Isamu smiled a little through his tears. At long last, his brother had finally done it - made contact with their mother in the world beyond worlds...

"And now they're both waiting... For us. But don't think we have to hurry." He smiled back. "Time on the other side is nothing like it is here. A day or a lifetime is just another heartbeat for the universe."

"You're actually going to do it, aren't you?" Isamu asked as he pulled away. He dared to hope, and wanted to see the truth in Minoru's eyes. "You're going to make sure we're reborn as a family."

Minoru nodded. He wasn't there yet, but he was close to figuring it out. He could feel it in his heart and soul. "When I hold vigil for you, I'll tell you where to wait for me. Until then, just leave this mission to me. You've got an entire village to look after."

He reached up, tugging gently on the necklace around Isamu's neck. They both had identical ones. Minoru's was their mother's, but Isamu's was their father's - both treasured family heirlooms gifted only when believed they were truly earned.

"Keep your head up. Make Papa proud."

Isamu wrapped his arms around his brother. "Thank you."

"...Anytime."
